George Orwell was one of the most influential writers in the world. He is the visionary author of Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty Four, along with non-fictional masterpieces such as Down and Out in Paris and London, Homage to Catalonia and The Road to Wigan Pier. Orwell was a strong critic of totalitarianism and an advocate for social justice.
George Orwell was born Eric Blair in India in 1903. He was born in a lower-upper-middle class family. His father served the British Empire.
Orwell only became popular after his death. By the time of his death in 1950, he had already become a world-renowned journalist and author for his reporting on war (shot in the neck in Spain) and on poverty (tramping in London, dishwashing in Paris, visits to pits and the poor in Wigan), for his cultural and political commentary and for his fiction.
His clear writing style and political purpose have influenced and inspired numerous journalists and authors of all generations across the world.
